For more than 150 years, The Indianapolis Public Library (IndyPL) has continuously adapted and expanded to serve the evolving needs of our city and its residents. The Pike Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library offers a wide range of sensory-inclusive services and spaces designed to support autistic, neurodivergent, and disabled patrons of all ages. Children’s programming includes sensory-inclusive Storytimes led by the Children’s Librarian that incorporate music and songs, with sensory supports such as sensory stands and sensory bins available during programs to encourage engagement and self-regulation. All reservable rooms, including a designated comfort room, are designed to support flexible sensory needs and feature adjustable lighting to accommodate light sensitivity, with the comfort room serving as a quiet, low-stimulus option. The branch also provides an Accessibility Station that includes a large-print keyboard, talk-to-text assistive technology on one public computer, and a workstation with armrests to support physical accessibility. Additional amenities such as free Wi-Fi, public computers with Microsoft Office, early learning computer stations, meeting rooms equipped with a hearing loop, reservable study rooms, exam proctoring services, and self-service options including mobile printing, document scanning, and walk-up book returns, support independent use of the library. Inclusive programs for teens and adults offer structured, low-pressure activities such as chair yoga, beginner yoga, teen paint-and-sip programs, book clubs, seed packing, and crocheting. The Teen Room is also equipped with an Xbox and Nintendo Switch, providing recreational opportunities designed with diverse sensory and social needs in mind.
