Detroit Historical Museum

The Detroit Historical Museum is located at 5401 Woodward Ave. (NW corner of Kirby) in Midtown Detroit. Permanent exhibits include the famous Streets of Old Detroit, the Allesee Gallery of Culture, Doorway to Freedom: Detroit and the Underground Railroad, Detroit 67: Perspectives, Detroit: The “Arsenal of Democracy,” Origins: Life Where the River Bends, America’s Motor City and The Glancy Trains. Each year the museum features a rotating schedule of temporary exhibitions that complement the permanent exhibits.

Exhibition spaces have been refined with accessibility in mind with few obstructions, appropriately leveled reader rails and buttons, and QR enabled content. Staff has been trained to welcome and accommodate neuro-diverse guests and tours are available that incorporate more sensory-friendly accommodations.  Family events regularly offer special hours for families who would benefit from a less stimulating museum experience. Sensory bags are available at our registration desks and the Society has plans to create quiet rooms in both this 2024.
