Martin County is always looking for innovative ways to be a more accessible destination for visitors of all abilities. Some highlights include:

  • Sensory Friendly Programming. Family-friendly attractions like the Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast and the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center host monthly sensory-friendly events, where children with sensory differences can enjoy the attractions in a modified, sensory-friendly environment (including limited admission, lowered sound stimulation, soft lighting, dedicated quiet spaces, and more).
  • Sensory Friendly Bags. Sensory-friendly bags are available to support individuals with autism and sensory sensitivities during their visit. These bags can be checked out on all Explore Natural Martin eco-tours and through the Martin County Library System. They include a variety of helpful tools such as fidget spinners, noise-cancelling headphones, tactile objects, communication tools, and other sensory-support items designed to promote comfort, focus, and enjoyment throughout the experience.
  • Official Aira Collaboration. Aira is a live, human-to-human professional assistance service for people who are blind or have low vision. Using the powerful combination of a camera and the Aira app on a smartphone, a professionally-trained agent will assist by visually interpreting what is in the camera’s view or shared on screen, from describing to reading, from explaining to navigating – just about anything, safely and securely. Aira operates 24/7/365 in five countries worldwide and supports service wherever there is an internet connection. The Martin County Office of Tourism & Marketing provides this service for free for all visitors to make exploring the destination more convenient and enjoyable.
  • Official Wheel the World Collaboration.  Martin County is an official partner of Wheel the World, an innovative travel solution for people with disabilities that allows users to research destinations and book hotels and experiences that match their accessibility needs. Wheel the World recently completed in-depth accessibility assessments at more than 30 local points of interest, including local hotels, restaurants, attractions, and more. They analyze over 200 data points across mobility-related, sensorial, and cognitive disabilities.
  • Accessible Beaches. Rolling beach wheelchairs are available for free use at all Martin County guarded beach locations, including Hobe Sound Beach, Stuart Beach, and Jensen Beach. These light, all-terrain chairs allow people with a wide variety of limitations to enjoy the beauty of our coastal areas. Constructed of polyvinyl chloride (or PVC), the chairs have four air-filled balloon tires, making them light and easy to navigate through sand. Each chair also has its own umbrella and a pouch attached to the back, big enough to haul most beach essentials. These are free and available on a first-come, first-serve basis – just request one at the lifeguard tower.
  • Accessible Transportation. There are multiple transportation options for visitors who prefer mobility assistance. Always On Time Transportation provides safe and reliable rides throughout the Treasure Coast region for anyone with limited mobility. Available 24/7, their fleet of modified and customized vans with accessible ramps offers private transportation around town, airport pick-ups and drop-offs, and any other transportation needs.
